Your Chance to Grab these Blanket Knitting Books

April 10, 2017 by Sarah White

New afghan knitting books from Leisure Arts.

Karey is the winner!

Last month I shared a couple of little booklets from Leisure Arts all about knitting quick afghans and blankets, and this week I’m giving you the change to get them for yourself.

The booklets are:

Make in a Weekend Afghans to Knit by Rita Weiss

Quick Throws to Knit by Rena V. Stevens

In all these books have 14 patterns for quick-knit warmers to throw on the back of your couch or give as housewarming gifts.

If you’d like a chance to win these, leave a comment on this post before the end of the day Sunday, April 16. I’d love to hear about your favorite knit blanket, whether you made it or someone made it for you. My super simple Bulky Stockinette Throw is the blanket I use the most, and I love it.

Thanks for visiting, commenting and sharing, and good luck!

My favorite knit blanket is one that my daughter received as a family hand me down. It’s nice to have things that were made by a grandparent for someone else that has survived the test of time.

I participated in the BERNAT Blanket Stitch Along knit version last year. At first I wasn’t crazy about the design but then when the applied cable border was added, oh my word I’m in love with that design!! I’m planning to make another using just one of the stitch patterns and all in one color or solid blanket with contrasting border.

I would love an opportunity at winning these booklets. I haven’t knitted in years and would like to get back in to knitting. I crochet and do counted cross stitch. Needlework has become a passion.

Blankets and afghans are the perfect project for evening quiet time in front of the TV or listening to the radio. My favorite pattern was a broomstick lace blanket I made to go in our new family room – it went very quickly and is very warm to snuggle under on snowy nights. These new booklets are bound to entice me to create another for my daughter’s new family room!

What a great couple of booklets to add to my library. Thanks for offering them. I’ve only knitted a couple of throws on size 50 needles. Anxious to try some others.

I made a really nice (IMHO) blanket last year that keeps me warm watching telly.

Learn a Flower Bobble Technique to Knit a Fun Shawl

Generally I like knitting patterns where I feel like you can use whatever yarn you have (because my stash is big enough and I want to use it, thanks) and make a successful project. This is one of those times when a special yarn makes the process that much easier.

The Floral Bouquet Shawl from Xandy Peters uses a specific extended color pooling yarn from Feisty Fibers, which allows you to place the bobble flowers with increasing frequency as you knit the project.

It starts with a solid color yarn, then the two color yarn is added in, and you make a bobble whenever you encounter the color pops. This would be hard to replicate with other yarn that doesn’t have the extended color pooling built in.

The background of the shawl is ribbed, making the project reversible.

The shawl uses fingering/sock yarn and comes out to be an asymmetrical triangle that’s 54 inches/137 cm long and 36 inches/ 90 cm deep and 60 inches/150 cm across the top edge.

Xandy says the pattern is for intermediate to advanced knitters. Knowing how to work traditional bobbles would probably help, but there’s a great video tutorial for how to work the floral bobbles so you can practice on other yarn or even incorporate the bobbles into other projects.

The bobbles are five-petaled flowers but they also kind of look like starfish to me, which could be fun on a child’s cardigan or other pattern. They’d also be fun on the leg of a sock or around the brim of a hat for extra whimsy.

The pattern includes photo and video tutorials, and written and charted instructions. It also includes tips on what to look for if you choose to use different yarn for the project, and instructions on how to dye your own yarn to use in the project.

If you want to give it a try, you can find the pattern on Ravelry.
