Cozy Cardigan Knitting Patterns

May 4, 2023 by Sarah White

As the weather gets warmer in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s easy to forget our Southern Hemisphere friends are dealing with the opposite weather pattern. As it gets colder there, knitters may well be thinking about big, cozy cardigans they can knit to keep off the chill.

Let’s face it; I love a cozy cardigan any time of year, so it was no trouble at all for me to collect this list of cardigans perfect for heading into (or being ready for) winter, whenever it next comes around where you live.

If you’re totally new to knitting garments, this bulky garter stitch cardigan from All About Ami is a great one to start with. She calls it the Downtown Cardi, and it’s a slouchy, easy to wear and easy to knit sweater that is all knit except for the ribbed edges. It’s available in four sizes and the fronts are not meant to meet, so a range of sizes can wear this one. Grab it on Etsy.

The Chunky Cardigan from Through the Stitch on Etsy features garter stitch edgings, a shawl collar and a single button closure. The rest of the cardigan is worked in stockinette, and while the designer has it rated for intermediate knitters it doesn’t look too difficult. It’s worked flat in pieces and has set in sleeves (which is probably the trickiest bit). There are six size options and it uses two strands of DK weight yarn held together.

Looking for a sweater that’s basically a blanket? Check out the Fernwood Cardigan from Jane Richmond. This cozy, super bulky, oversized cardigan uses double moss stitch for tons of texture and has a deep V-neck for easy wear. It’s long and boxy and has patch pockets and honestly I don’t know why you haven’t downloaded it already.

And if you want something warm but not as bulky as these other options, consider the Kal cardigan from Claire Jackson on Ravelry. This one ups the skill level a bit with a touch of half brioche stitch, but it’s not difficult. The pattern is worked from the top down with DK weight yarn held together with a fuzzy alpaca to make it warm and cozy but not heavy. It’s available in nine sizes.
