Easy Tops to Knit for Summer

April 27, 2016 by Sarah White

The weather is officially warm here in Arkansas, and all I want to do is knit summery tops. So I decided to hit up Ravelry for some easy, quick projects that those of us who are already feeling the warm can knit now and have off the needles pretty quickly, while those in cooler climates can start working on soon and have done in plenty of time to enjoy for as long as their warm season is.

One that has been on my to-knit list for so long I bought the pattern booklet and the yarn back when it was first released and now the pattern is free is Flow by Norah Gaughan. This simple tank top looks like something I would live in all summer, and this may just be the year I finally get it knit.

Stefanie Japel’s Bad Penny is another little top I’ve meant to make forever. (It’s from a 2004 Knitty.) It’s a top-down tee with contrasting edgings that’s super cute and casual.

I’ve also had Sarah Wilson’s Blue Hawaii tank on my mind for a few years. I like the lacy top and that it’s something that can carry you from beach to dinner, as if I ever do that, but stil.

Sunkist by Kristin Kapur is a super-cute, easy, top-down raglan V-neck originally worked with 3/4 sleeves, but you could make them shorter if you don’t need so much chill-chasing (I always need an extra layer to protect against air conditioning).

The original version of Rosa’s Sleeveless Cardi-Jumper by Emma Fassio was worked in a bulky alpaca blend, but choose cotton yarn linen or another lighter-weight blend for a great summer piece.

Another great Knitty project is Askew, a bias-knit tank worked in lovely Noro Silk Garden; it’s a great layering piece you can use in many seasons.tank top knitting patterns

More tanks: a simple tank top from Patons, the Sarah Tank Top (yes, please!) from Domestic Dutchess, the Top Knitted in Moss Stitch by DROPS Design, the Simple Knit Top from Crafty Queens, Summer in Luxembourg by Totally Stricken, Elaine Phillips’ Vine Lace Tank Top with I-cord, the seamless Summer Breeze by Dana Berry and Scarlet Taylor’s Lace Up Tank Top.

And short-sleeved tops: Paloma by Kyoko Nakayoshi (which is worked on the top in Garter Stitch and has buttons along one side), the Drop Stitch Top from Patons, the Summer Lace Panel T-Shirt from Cascade Yarns, Rebecca Airmet’s Top-Down Tee, the Easy Side-t0-Side Summer Top by Claudia Olson and the Summer Top with Lace Pattern from DROPS Design.

That ought to keep you going for a while. If you have a favorite summer top pattern you’ve knit before, I’d love to hear about it!

Knit a Garter Stitch Blanket with a Twist

When I first started knitting again after a long absence from the craft (which has now been almost 25 years ago!) I really didn’t like garter stitch that much. I found it super boring, somehow even more boring than knitting stockinette stitch in the round, even though it’s exactly the same thing.

Over the years I’ve softened my opinion, and even grown to like garter stitch. There’s nothing wrong with being plain, and actually the texture of garter stitch is more interesting than stockinette.

Also there are fun things you can do with garter stitch to make it more interesting if you want to, such as adding stripes, working on the bias, or doing fun effects to change the look.

That’s the way with the Bernat Twist My Way Garter Knit Blanket. Using combinations of casting on and binding off creates what they call a Swiss cheese effect along two sides of the blanket. This is a lot of fun in the self-striping ombre yarn they chose for the pattern, but it would also be fun in a solid color or making your own stripes.

Despite the dramatic effect, this pattern is rated easy. It’s worked from side to side (if you consider the “cheesy” edges the top and bottom) and has an eight-row repeat that involves binding off and then casting on again to make the holes. They’re kind of like giant buttonholes.

Once you get the hang of it it’s a pretty easy repeat to remember, and it will be smooth knitting as big as you want to make it.

You can download this pattern from the Yarnspirations website for free, or you can buy a kit direct from them that includes the yarn you need (and knitting needles if you need those, too). Bernat Sport Ombre Twist, which is what is used in the pattern, comes in 12 self patterning colors and is a DK weight acrylic yarn.
