Mosaic knitting is one of my favorite kinds of colorwork. Instead of having to carry and work with two different colors of yarn at the same time, mosaic knitting allows you to work with just one color per round, slipping stitches to make the pattern appear.
It’s a great way to make a repeating graphic pattern, and it’s really easy once you understand how it works.
You can play with this simple method of colorwork in the Pine Sweater pattern from Lauren McElroy.
The pattern uses bulky yarn and includes color patterning at the yoke and along the bottom of the sweater. It uses bulky yarn and is worked in the round from the bottom up. The bottom pattern looks like trees, while to top is simple diamond shapes.
On Ravelry the pattern is described as using mosaic knitting on the bottom and slipped stitches at the top. What’s the difference? Mosaic knitting is always worked with two rows or rounds in each color, and the row or round is the same each time (as in, whatever stitches were slipped on the first row of the color are slipped again on the second row).
On the other hand, slip stitch patterns can change from one round to the next, and stitches may be slipped in different ways (with the yarn to the front, for example, which is not done in mosaic knitting).
Check out this post from Heather Storta that goes more in-depth into the difference between slip stitch colorwork and mosaic knitting.
The pattern is adjustable to different sizes and is suitable for intermediate to advanced knitters. You can download the pattern from Ravelry.
