I’ve written nearly 3,500 posts for this site over the years (thank you for being here!) so a lot of times when I have an idea for a post I have to go back and see if I’ve done it before and how long it has been so I can do it again. It looks like the last time I shared a roundup of mosaic knitting patterns was back in 2021, so it’s as good a time as any for an update.
Mosaic knitting is one of the easiest color knitting techniques out there. It uses slipped stitches to create patterns, and you never have to knit with more than one color at a time.
If you’re totally new to this technique, the Mountain Road Beanie from Crafts Everywhere on Etsy is a good place to start. It uses a simple repeating pattern and can be worked in either bulky or super bulky yarn, so you’ll get the basics of the technique down in no time.
Another great way to learn moasic on a small scale is to use it for just part of a project, like the cuffs of the Mosaic Block Socks by Knitten Kristen. These socks use the leftovers from a self-striping sock yarn ball used on another pair of socks, which adds extra depth to the colorwork without any more work. You can grab this pattern on Raverly.
A simple repeating pattern with no shaping is also a fun way to learn mosaic knitting, and you can do that with my easy mosaic cowl knitting pattern. It also uses a multicolored yarn to add a little more interest to the design, but you can use two solids if you’d rather.
Another pattern with an allover mosaic design is Pernille Larsen’s mosaic sweater on Ravelry. It uses fingering and lace weight yarn held together and is available in five sizes (and eight languages, including English, Spanish and German, among others).
Make a single mosaic motif into a fun tote bag with the Totelly Tote from Arella Seaton. This is actually a series of patterns using different designs (you can find them all on Ravelry), which is another fun way to play with mosaics.
Go wild working with different mosaic designs in Mosaic Mania, a superfine shawl from Ute Nawratil. It’s a bit of a choose your own adventure pattern, with seven different mosaic building blocks you can combine in different ways to make a shawl as long and as wide as you like. Combine wild balls of sock yarn to make the colors lots of fun, or make it a stash busting project with all your odd balls. The pattern, in English and German, is on Ravelry.
Another mosaic sampler pattern is the Canyon Blanket from Knit Purl Construction on Etsy. This one is worked in black and white, though it would be pretty in any colors with high contrast. It uses worsted-weight yarn.
