Knitting Patterns for Christmas Gnomes and Elves

December 1, 2022 by Sarah White

christmas elf and gnome knitting patterns

‘Tis the season for knitting adorable holiday themed gnomes, elves, and other assorted holly jolly creatures. If you’re looking for another fun holiday doll to add to your collection, check out these super sweet Christmas dolls.

The Christmas Elf Toy knitting pattern from KS Craft on Etsy features a boy and girl elf (the bodies are the same but one wears overalls and one has a dress). The dolls are about 11 inches tall and made with DK-weight yarn.

Susan B. Anderson’s New Gnome (available on Ravelry) is worked from the bottom all the way to the tip of the hat in one piece in the round. So many options to make it your own, from using different colors of stripes on the body to different colored hats and beards.

This sweet Christmas elf is called Evan, and he was designed by Llamz Handcrafted on Etsy. He’s a classic helper elf with overalls and striped stockings, and he’s worked in DK weight yarn.

Chatty Cathy Knitting on Etsy has made these adorable Christmas tree gnomes, with lots of options for making them fit your decor. With five design options and two sizes, you’re sure to find the right one to fit. They’re worked in fingering weight yarn but you can use heavier yarn to make them bigger.

And of course, Santa himself is the ultimate elf, so why not stitch a little Santa to add to your collection? The October Santa Claus from Amy Munson on Ravelry is a gnome-like design, worked in the round in fingering or sport weight yarn.

Christmas gnomes have become wildly popular in recent years, and it’s no surprise why. These little guys are incredibly cute, and they add a touch of whimsy to any home.

Plus, they make a great DIY craft project! Gnomes are easy to make and require only basic materials like felt, stuffing, and yarn. Making your own gnome gives you the freedom to customize it however you want — whether that means including a funny phrase or a special holiday message.

You can even make the gnome look like a family member or friend! Plus, it’s a fun activity for the whole family – or even just for yourself. So if you’re looking for a creative, festive way to spruce up your home this holiday season, why not make your own Christmas gnome? It’s sure to bring a smile to everyone who sees it.

A Blanket Knitting Pattern Where Yarn Selection is Everything

Many times when I write these posts I will say something like “you can use any yarn you want” or “this would be a great stash-busting project.” That’s just how my mind works. And my stash, too, since I probably have sweater quantity of two or three yarns at most, but tons of singles and odd balls and leftovers.

Blankets are generally a really good way to use up those bits, but in this case, I think you’re going to want to plan it out a bit better.

Looking at photos of the Color Study Blanket from Purl Soho, it looks like it’s made with two yarns held together, and that block in the center is worked with one of each color from the adjoining sides to make a mixed up color.

But that’s not actually how it’s done. This is three separate colors (four, really, with the neutrals in the corners) chosen form a yarn with an expansive palette so they play off each other. The project calls for a worsted weight superwash wool, which is a great choice for a blanket that’s both warm and washable.

This pattern was originally designed by Laura Ferguson and was updated by Hiromi Glover. It is worked in one piece in garter stitch intarsia, which is a great way to learn the intarsia technique if you don’t already know it. It comes in crib or throw sizes.

Despite the introduction to this post, I am going to go ahead and say that, yes, of course you could do this blanket with scraps or odd balls or even just choose five colors that don’t blend together so easily. But I really do love the look of the color play, and I think it would be worth your time to find colors that play well together to get a similar effect.

This pattern is available for free from Purl Soho.
