I’m not much of a Fourth of July knitter (though I did make a few patterns for the holiday over the years for About), but there’s something really fun about the basic combination of red, white and blue. (I also did a sort of patriotic pattern for CraftBits a couple of years ago, a Captain America Placemat.)
Here are some project to get you thinking about stitching in the colors and motifs of the American flag, some of which would work just fine for people of other nations whose colors are also red, white and blue.
The Fourth of July Baby Dress by Aunshul Rege is adorable and the perfect way to welcome a summer baby. I love the ties on the side, which both make both finishing and dressing the baby easier. And the Preemie Hats inspired by the flag from Wool Windings would be a great gift to your local NICU.
This Captain America Sweater is sized for a boy size 8 and found at I Am, Therefore I Knit, but it wouldn’t be hard to adapt a sweater pattern of the size you need and add the color blocking and stripes. I love that the striped portion is worked sideways so you don’t have to deal with intarsia.
Berroco has a great Flag Pullover sized for women, covered with stars and stripes. This one does use intarsia for the stars, but they’re a pretty simple shape so don’t let that intimidate you.
Don’t want to knit a sweater in the summer? How about a pair of socks? The American Flag Socks from the Thinking Knitter include 50 stars and 13 stripes just like the real flag and come with a sweet (and sad) story about their origin.
Another nice small flag-inspired project is the Colbert Nation fingerless gloves, inspired by some he wore on TV and designed by just be. Or stitch a pair of Americana Wrist Warmers from Cirilia Rose.
And if you’d rather knit some home decor you can use throughout the summer season, try the Flag Table Runner from Willow Yarns or the spectacular knit American Flag from Black Sheep.
Do you knit for the Fourth of July? I’d love to hear about what you’ve made.
