Surgical Face Mask Knitting Patterns

April 3, 2020 by Shellie Wilson

We have been inundated with requests for face mask knitting patterns so we decided to do all the research for you and find you the best ones. Now, lots of people are saying that knitted masks are unsafe and we are not suggesting they are better than store-bought filtered facemasks BUT, maybe you are in a position where you can’t buy a face mask, can’t find one in your state and now you are legally required to wear one.

Maybe wearing a face mask isn’t something you ever thought about wearing 2 months ago, heck even 2 weeks ago, but here we are. The handmade sewn masks are very popular right now but not everyone can sew. So I am putting my knitting skills to good use and making these masks for myself and family until we can purchase medical-grade ones.

Lots of these masks have gaps for carbon filters too. Here is a knitting pattern via Etsy which has the filter pocket.

This is the most basic, simple design and this face mask pattern is FREE.

A more basic style pattern can be found via the link for free too.

This pattern is more of a face mask cowl, which personally I really like as it is not hanging off my ears and cutting into them.

This mask is a long cowl style facial mask. Again, it means you have minimal skin exposed to the virus, it’s nice and warm and not hanging off your ears. Great for any frontline staff who have to work outside.

Still wanting to be stylish? This one has a long frontage on it and is perfect for the chest area.

Do you have a pattern that we should add to this list? Drop a comment below and we will include it to this knitting mask list.

Remember to stay home and stay safe!

I am curious if all these are machine washable as masks are to be washed after each use/

It would depend on the yarn you use if they are washable. I would probably choose cotton with a fabric liner if I were going to knit a mask.

Is there a pattern for a carrying bag for the masks, to be worn around the neck?

A Sweet Skater Dress to Knit

I know knitting a dress sounds like a major time commitment. And that’s before I even tell you that this particular dress, the Sixth Ave Skater Dress by Briana Luppino, is worked in light fingering weight yarn.

But would you just take a moment to look at it and tell me if it doesn’t look like it would be worth all the time you would spend knitting it? And it’s miles of stockinette stitch so it’s actually beginner friendly and a great semi-mindless knit you can take with you on your travels this summer and wear when it is done.

The dress is worked from the top down with tank straps, a scoop neck, waist shaping and a flowy skirt for a fun and comfortable fit.

The pattern has 10 sizes, with finished bust measurements ranging from 28 to 64 inches, or 71.5 to 163 cm. The sample shown was worked with 4 inches/10 cm of negative ease at the bust, and the designer says most people like between 2 and 6 inches/5 to 15 cm of negative ease in the bust and around 10 inches/25.4 cm positive ease in the hips.

(To refresh your memory, negative ease means the measurement of the garment is smaller than your actual body measurement, while positive ease is bigger than your body.)

To pick a size you’d work from the bust measurement because you can always add more or fewer decreases as you need to get your desired fit at the waist and hips. And because it’s worked from the top down you can try it on as often as you like to make sure it’s the perfect fit.

The I-cord edgings give the dress a super casual feel, and I think this would be a great one to add to your summer rotation. (Yes, even with a wool blend yarn.)

You can see lots of cute finished versions and grab a copy of the pattern for yourself on Ravelry.
