A Bunch of Easy Pumpkin Knitting Patterns

September 16, 2020 by Sarah White

Fall is here, and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about pumpkin-themed projects! Whether you’re looking to decorate your home for Halloween or simply want to add some autumnal touches to your knitted items, pumpkin knitting patterns are a great way to do it. And what’s even better is that these patterns are easy and perfect for knitters of all skill levels.

In this article, we’ve rounded up a bunch of easy pumpkin knitting patterns that you can use to make a variety of pumpkin-themed items. From cozy scarves and blankets to cute little pumpkin ornaments and dishcloths, there’s something for everyone.

For beginners, we’ve included patterns that use basic stitches and simple shaping techniques, making them easy to follow and perfect for those new to knitting. More experienced knitters will also find patterns that incorporate more advanced techniques and textures, such as cables and lace, for a more challenging project.

Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy project to work on during a cozy night in or a more complex pattern to keep you busy over the weekend, you’ll find something you love in this collection of easy pumpkin knitting patterns. So grab your needles and yarn, and get ready to create some pumpkin-themed magic!

Last year I knit a bunch of pumpkins (OK, 3) and I’d really like to have a whole mantel full of pumpkins of different sizes, shapes and colors.

Whether you want to knit a single pumpkin or a whole patch, here are some great patterns to get you started, all available on Etsy.

This pattern from Apple and Acorn Country is knit with ribbing and has a cute little curlicue stem. You can get it for $5.35.

Fit Food Art Shop’s pumpkin knitting pattern uses super bulky yarn and ribbing for a quick and easy project. If you can knit a hat you can knit a pumpkin! This one runs $3.20 and includes four pattern options.

For $3.58 you can grab a copy of the Sweet Pickins Pumpkin from Lamb and Co Designs. These are worked in Stockinette stitch and super bulky yarn, with an option for speckles.

If you’d rather make yours in worsted weight yarn, EmmaCrochetDesign4U has a sweet little Stockinette pattern that comes in three different sizes. You can get it for $4.95.

I love the bigger scale of the larger pumpkin in the pattern from Just Easy Knitting, which costs $2.80. The big one is 14 inches around while the smaller one is 5.5 inches.

Or make a fancy pumpkin using a velvet yarn with the pattern from The Ville Crochet. This is one where the yarn really makes the pattern that much cuter but you could use a boucle or textured yarn, too, if you wanted. This pattern runs $3.

And finally I shared huge, so why not also tiny? This pattern from Ebony and Teal is super small and adorable. You can knit a ton in no time and use up all your autumn-colored yarns. Grab this pattern for $2.

A Blanket Knitting Pattern Where Yarn Selection is Everything

Many times when I write these posts I will say something like “you can use any yarn you want” or “this would be a great stash-busting project.” That’s just how my mind works. And my stash, too, since I probably have sweater quantity of two or three yarns at most, but tons of singles and odd balls and leftovers.

Blankets are generally a really good way to use up those bits, but in this case, I think you’re going to want to plan it out a bit better.

Looking at photos of the Color Study Blanket from Purl Soho, it looks like it’s made with two yarns held together, and that block in the center is worked with one of each color from the adjoining sides to make a mixed up color.

But that’s not actually how it’s done. This is three separate colors (four, really, with the neutrals in the corners) chosen form a yarn with an expansive palette so they play off each other. The project calls for a worsted weight superwash wool, which is a great choice for a blanket that’s both warm and washable.

This pattern was originally designed by Laura Ferguson and was updated by Hiromi Glover. It is worked in one piece in garter stitch intarsia, which is a great way to learn the intarsia technique if you don’t already know it. It comes in crib or throw sizes.

Despite the introduction to this post, I am going to go ahead and say that, yes, of course you could do this blanket with scraps or odd balls or even just choose five colors that don’t blend together so easily. But I really do love the look of the color play, and I think it would be worth your time to find colors that play well together to get a similar effect.

This pattern is available for free from Purl Soho.
